Buster Dedication
I went to the vet yesterday. It wasn't a happy visit. My Aunt's cat Buster passed away. I was there to care for his arrangements. My Aunt, the one who lives with us, the one from Yonkers, was devastated. Buster a.k.a Teedles a.k.a Little Teese a.k.a Tee Tees (she has a million names for that cat) had been a good friend and family member to her for a long time.
But fate found me and Buster at the vet. I arrived with my box and talked with the receptionist whom we know and like. There were things to work through and we worked through them. Towards the end, our vet came out. She didn't know why I was there. She was sad to find out.
We talked about the legacy of Buster - his many aliases, how loved he was, and what a good cat he was amidst the savage pack of the four other cats my cat-lady Aunt has. He was a happy cat. He was happy in Knoxville. He had his family, his posse, and a pimp cat apartment. That's all he needed to be happy.
And then there's my Aunt. It couldn't have happened to a nicer person. As some of you may know, she came to live with us several months back. Why? First of all, because she's mad cool, nice, sweet, funny, and fun. It also helps that she's retired, is a junkie for children, and we have a baby. She's from Yonkers, just north of the Bronx. She worked for the phone company for most of her life. She has an accent as thick as syrup.
But like Buster, she's loving Knoxville. She wakes up every day happy and in good spirits. I think it's insane - but it's true. She hangs out with my wife and the baby. They bop around town shopping and doing errands and stuff. They drink cawfee, play with the dawgs, and judge people. I come home, we do the family thing, we sleep, the cycle begins again. Through it all, my Aunt is positive. She has her sense of humor and her spirit. She's a million years away from the constant complaining you'll get from me.
Which is pretty much what my vet said after we finished talking about Buster, or B-money as I like to call him. My vet reads KnoxvilleYankee.com. She's southern, but she's cool and fun and smart and kooky and we all love each other like teenage best friends forever. Anyway, she told me she was reading some older posts, and I asked her why. She said it was because I'm turning into a whiner lately and the old stuff was better.
I would be outraged at the insult... ... if it wasn't true. Curse you doctor! I gave her a speech about how 'the good' melds into daily life and you take it for granted, but the bad stuff still sticks out. I told her about how I've tried to tone it down or at least space it out. She wasn't fully buying it. I'm not sure I was either. Incidentally, there was an older very southern and very sweet woman standing there the whole time, which made me feel kind of embarrassed to be revealed as a sometimes Knoxville playa hater. Curse you doctor!
So.... like the defiant child I am, I will show them all and talk about something uplifting, something positive, something that shines with admiration for Knoxville, enthusiastically and sincerely.
And so then, in memory of Buster, and dedicated to my ever upbeat Aunt - and also my kooky but wonderful vet, I bring you:
5 Reasons why Knoxville is Awesome:
1) It's 1:18AM, my son is on my lap wiggling and giggling, I have work tomorrow, but since my commute is nothing, I'm good. Hell... I think I'm staying up to 2AM. I might have no choice if I don't wrap this monster of a post up.
2) When I got home from work today, my Dad was here. He lives in North Carolina. For the first time in a long time he lives within driving distance of us. He came to pick up the drums because he's joining a band and I'm not playing them now. We spent the evening restoring them and eating Thai food. He's sleeping downstairs in our guest room. The fact that we have a guest room still stands out as something awesome and only possible for us in a place like Knoxville. Family + Thai Food + Guest Rooms = Reason #2 why Knoxville is awesome. Did I mention something about wrapping up?
3) My job kicks ass. Unfortunately I can't really talk about it, but I guess you could say I play a significant role in jtv.com. Regardless, I have been blessed with some nice career opportunities since coming to Knoxville which have been some of the most fun and rewarding of my career.
4) My wife continues to be the happiest she's ever been. She's not happy tonight, specifically with me, even more specifically because I spent $450 on drum stuff without talking to her, mere weeks after being a lecturing jerk about her dropping jack on stuff she felt she needed. But I digress. On most days when I'm not being a fool, she's the happiest I've seen her.
5) I have three dogs. They are fun, sweet, and ridiculously retarded. We have a house that can support three dogs, and a yard for the to play in. This is possible for us, because we live in Knoxville.
Take that!

Sorry to hear about Buster. I just discovered your blog and will be back. Good reading so far.
Oh I'm so sorry about Buster. It's been too long since I've read this...so I'm way behind. Tell Aunt Roberta how sorry Clay and I are. As a fellow crazy cat lady I understand. See you shortly!
